Le public français est au rendez-vous ce lundi soir devant l'Olympia pour le concert co-headline d'In Flames et Five Finger Death Punch avec Of Mice & Men en première partie. La soirée promet d'être explosive et après les contrôles de sécurité d'usage, d'autant plus nombreux et minutieux que Five Finger Death Punch a reçu des menaces en 2015, nous entrons dans la salle pour un concert qu'on attend depuis un sacré moment !
Of Mice And Men ouvre le concert à 19h30. Le public est encore clairsemé au fond de la salle et l'ambiance a du mal à s'installer, voyons si le Metalcore énergique du groupe sera suffisant pour y remédier ! « Unbreakable » permet une entrée en matière entre voix claire au timbre très agréable et scream puissant. Le tout est soutenu par une ligne mélodique agressive et lourde. Les musiciens restent statiques mais n'hésitent pas à headbanguer et à motiver la foule, cependant leur immobilisme donne l'impression que la scène est bien trop grande pour eux et qu'ils peinent à occuper l'espace. Le groupe continue avec « Pain » après que le chanteur, Aaron Pauley, ait demandé au public son avis sur le pantalon rose à paillettes d'Alan Ashby, l'un des guitaristes. Tous se montrent très souriants tout au long du set et remercient le public parisien, lui demandant de crier et de sauter ! Avec « You Make Me Sick », Of Mice & Men montre son talent pour écrire des morceaux plein de vie et l'ambiance commence finalement à s'installer sur la fin de leur passage, marqué par « Warzone » et « The Depths ». Le batteur, un peu en retrait sur la scène, s'en donne à coeur joie pour marteler ses toms. Je ne sais pas si le public est aussi peu réceptif parce qu'il est avant tout venu pour In Flames et Five Finger Death Punch ou parce que le groupe ne convainc vraiment pas. J'avoue être surprise puisqu'en dépit d'un set court, le groupe s'investit dans sa prestation mais cela ne suffit pas à chauffer la salle. Est-ce cependant nécessaire avant des groupes comme In Flames et Five Finger Death Punch ?

C'est ensuite au tour d'In Flames de monter sur scène et je reconnais avoir quelques appréhensions. Je les ai vus trois fois au cours des dernières années et j'ai été terriblement déçue à chaque fois alors que j'aime beaucoup les écouter sur CD, mais j'essaie de rester le plus neutre possible afin de voir ce qu'ils vont donner ce soir, et je ne regrette pas le déplacement car, pour la première fois, j'ai le sentiment que le groupe a donné un bon concert, non mieux ! In Flames est enfin de retour et ils sont prêts à en découdre et à assurer un show impressionnant ! C'est avec « Drained » que débute ce concert, le groupe étant caché derrière un grand drap noir sur lequel on peut distinguer leur logo, puis il tombe, sur les premières notes de « Before I Fall ». L'espace scénique dont ils bénéficient est deux fois plus grand que celui qu'avait Of Mice & Men et des écrans géants ont été installés. Selon les titres, on y voit des gueules de chiens enragés, des corps nus dans des pièces exiguës, des ombres bleutées ou vertes, mais aussi des yeux sortis de nulle part. C'est ensuite « Take This Life » qui s'élève, sous les acclamations du public. Le groupe se montre actif et engagé sur scène, occupant bien l'espace. La plus grande différence pour moi est la cohésion qui règne entre eux, et cela ne donne plus l'impression d'être un projet nombriliste centré autour d'Anders Fridén, le chanteur. Pour le dire simplement, In Flames a retrouvé une âme ! Ce dernier s'apprête d'ailleurs a annoncé « Trigger » lorsqu'il a un trou de mémoire et se tourne vers son guitariste : "Oh non, j'ai oublié le nom de la chanson... Björn, ne te moque pas de moi !" et ils partent dans un fou rire. Après cet égarement qui semble avoir amusé le public, le groupe joue « Dead Alone » et « Darker Time ». Niclas Engelin se promène sur la scène, joue avec le public, prend des expressions faciales menaçantes ou souriantes. Les acclamations et félicitations du public sont si fortes que je pense ne pas être la seule à ressentir le retour d'In Flames au meilleur de sa forme. Leur nom est scandé longuement et les plus jeunes membres filment cette foule en admiration alors que les autres semblent réellement touchés de cette démonstration. Le chanteur en profite d'ailleurs : « Faîtes du bruit pour nos nouveaux meilleurs amis d'Of Mice & Men qui mériteraient de jouer bien plus longtemps ! ». Sur le morceau « Alias », un mannequin géant du Owlboy, la mascotte du groupe, est descendu derrière la batterie et ses yeux rouges planeront sur nous durant le reste du set. L'énergie du public est visiblement communicative car après la merveilleuse « The Mirror's Truth », le chanteur fait remarquer : « D'habitude, je ne fais pas la dernière partie, sauf quand je me sens en pleine forme comme ce soir, merci Paris ! ». « The End » porte bien son nom et marque la fin d'un concert très réussi pour les Suédois qui ont su renouer avec plus de force que jamais leur lien avec leur public.

Après une heure de concert monstrueux, le groupe cède la place à Five Finger Death Punch et j'espère que le groupe est en forme parce qu'In Flames a vraiment tout donné ! A nouveau, un grand drap noir cache la scène, mais lorsque les musiciens se devinent derrière, la fosse se déchaîne. Et "Lift Me Up" offre une ouverture parfaite pour un tel concert puisque le public reprend le refrain en hurlant ! Je n'avais pas pu entendre Ivan Moody, le chanteur, au Hellfest et je suis conquise en voyant l'énergie qu'il déploie et la maîtrise de sa voix dont il fait preuve ! « Never Enough » est le morceau suivant et il suscite une adhésion tout aussi grande. Leur dernier album est mis en avant avec « Wash It All Away » suivi du titre éponyme et de « Ain't My Last Dance ». Chris Kael, le bassiste à la barbe de pieuvre, se promène sur la scène, jouant avec les photographes comme avec le public en tirant la langue, faisant des doigts d'honneur qui sont presque devenus sa marque de fabrique, mais aussi et surtout en bombardant la fosse de médiators. Ivan sait que nous tous ce soir dans cette salle nous sommes une « Bad Company » alors il lance le titre légendaire et que le public connaît parfaitement. La scène paraît parfois un peu grande, avec un décor scénique plus léger que celui d'In Flames qui avait mis son batteur et son claviériste sur un piédestal de chaque côté. « Jekyll & Hyde » offre l'occasion à Ivan de parcourir la scène en arborant des mimiques joueuses et mutines, imitant les changements de personnalités du célèbre personnage de roman. Il prend cependant toujours le temps de sourire à ses fans et de leur adresser un signe, parfois de dessiner un coeur avec ses mains. Après la courte pause marquée par « The Agony Of Regret », Jason Hook et sa guitare acoustique sont mises au premier plan pour les chansons « Wrong Side Of Heaven » et « Remember Everything ». Fidèle à lui-même, le chanteur profite de ce moment plus calme pour inviter trois enfants sur scène. Le public les soutient du mieux qu'il peut, d'autant plus que le plus jeune d'entre eux et la jeune fille fondent en larmes. Ivan reste près d'eux et tente de les réconforter en nous présentant « la nouvelle génération du Metal ! ». Après avoir amusé le public en ouvrant la canette d'energy drink qu'il a offert au plus jeune en l'invitant à boire, il les fait descendre de scène et le show reprend avec « Coming Down » et « Under And Over It ». Le groupe maintient une allure effrénée sur scène et rien n'arrête la machine une fois qu'elle est lancée ! Jeremy Spencer, le batteur, semble un peu isolé au fond de la scène et Zoltan Bathory, le second guitariste, reste du côté droit de la scène. La sublime « The Bleeding » est le dernier titre de ce soir et le groupe disparaît en coulisses après avoir lancé médiators et baguettes. Ivan prend cependant le temps de rester et de signer tout ce que le public lui tend ainsi que de remercier tous les membres de la sécurité de la salle.

La soirée était largement à la hauteur de mes espérances ! J'avoue avoir eu peur que nous ne puissions pas vous présenter ce report accompagné de photos car les consignes de sécurité étaient très strictes, en raison des menaces reçues par le groupe en 2015, et les photographes n'ont su qu'au dernier moment qu'ils pourraient shooter, étant confinés dans une salle à part le reste du temps, sauf s'ils y laissaient tout leur matériel. Mais ce concert était un vrai moment de plaisir ! Of Mice And Men n'a pas eu suffisamment de temps pour faire ses preuves mais j'espère que beaucoup iront les voir lors de leur prochain passage en France. In Flames a mis à terre tous les souvenirs négatifs que je gardais de leurs précédents shows et n'a jamais été en aussi bonne forme depuis un sacré moment ! Et enfin, Five Finger Death Punch : maîtrise, énergie, bon esprit, partage et titres explosifs, ça ne pouvait que marcher ! Le public ressort ravi et ce concert restera dans les mémoires !
Pour conclure, je tiens à revenir sur un point après avoir entendu à la sortie que le public s'était fait avoir (pour rester polie) car Five Finger Death Punch n'a joué qu'une heure. La réponse à cette remarque m'a encore plus choquée : "Tu sais, c'est normal. Ivan est instable alors ils ne peuvent pas le faire jouer plus longtemps.". Au-delà du fait que cette phrase donne terriblement l'impression qu'Ivan est une sorte de créature incontrôlable qui sauterait à la gorge de ses fans si le groupe jouait plus d'une heure, je crois qu'il faut, assez basiquement, rappeler le principe d'une tournée où In Flames et Five Finger Death Punch sont en co-headline, ce qui signifie qu'ils joueront chacun une heure, dans la configuration parisienne (horaire obligatoire de fin de concert en raison des nuisances pour les salles situées en ville) en tous cas. Alors oui, cela peut avoir le désavantage de donner des sets "trop" courts aux groupes, et je reconnais que Five Finger Death Punch n'a pas joué « Burn MF » par exemple, tout comme In Flames qui a vu une partie de ses chansons mises de côté, mais cela permet de voir deux monstres du Metal jouer l'un après l'autre la même soirée, et je pense que c'est bien suffisant pour profiter d'un concert, surtout quand l'investissement scénique est tel !

The French audience is ready tonight in front of the Olympia, Paris, for the co-headline concert of In Flames and Five Finger Death Punch, with Of Mice & Men as support band. The evening will surely be explosive and, after the usual security checks, even more numerous and meticulous because Five Finger Death Punch received some threats back in 2015, we enter in the venue, all really impatient!
Of Mice & Men is the first band to play at 7:30 p.m. The public is still scattered in the back of the room and the ambiance is not really great so far so let’s see if the band’s Metalcore will be powerful enough to fix this! ”Unbreakable””is the perfect way to start with a mix between a clear vocal with a sweet tone and some aggressive screams. The melodic part is heavy and brutal and gives strength to the song. The musicians don’t move much on stage but headbang and motivate the crowd, however, it seems that the space they have is too big for them since they don’t really use it in the best way. Then the band goes on with “Pain” once the singer, Aaron Pauley, asked the pit what they think of Alan Ashby’s pink and shinny pants. They are all smiling a lot during the show and thank their Parisian fans, asking us to scream and jump! With “You Make Me Sick”, Of Mice & Men shows its talent to write lively songs and the atmosphere starts to get warmer at the end of their set with “Warzone” and “The Depths”. Their drummer, who stays a bit in the background, seems to have a great time hammering his drum kit. I can’t say if the public is not really receptive to the band’s music because they just want to see In Flames and Five Finger Death Punch or if it is because the band doesn’t really convince them tonight; but I must admit I am surprised because even if the band involved itself in their unfortunately too short concert, they don’t really succeed in warming up the pit. But is it needed before bands such as In Flames and Five Finger Death Punch?

It is now time to welcome In Flames on stage and I have some apprehensions since I saw them three times in the last few years and I was disappointed every time while I really like to listen to their CDs. But let’s try to stay as neutral as possible to see how it is going to be tonight, and I really don’t regret to be at this show because, for the first time ever, I truly enjoy their performance during the concert. No, it’s even better than that! In Flames is finally back and they are ready to give everything they got for the show! The set starts with “Drained” while the band is hiding behind a large black sheet on which we can see the band’s logo, then it falls on the first notes of “Before I Fall”. Their available space on stage is twice bigger than what Of Mice & Men had and some enormous screens had been put on stage. Depending on the songs, we can see some furious dogs, naked bodies in cramped rooms, blue and green shadows and also some eyes coming out of nowhere and staring at us. Then it is time for “Take This Life”, welcomed by a lot of applause from the audience. The band is full of energy and involved on stage, using all the space they have. The biggest difference for me, compared to their previous shows, is the cohesion between the band members. There is no longer this feeling that it’s a sort of self-centered project around Anders Fridén, the singer. To say it in other words, In Flames got its soul back! The singer is just about to announce “Trigger” when he has a memory lapse and turns toward his guitar player: “Oh no man, I forgot the title of the song! Come on Björn, don’t you dare make fun of me!” and they start to laugh. After this short episode which was fun for the public, the band plays “Dead Alone” and “Darker Time”. Niclas Engelin is walking on the stage, having fun with the public, smiling or trying to look threatening. The ovation is so strong that I’m convinced that I’m not the only one to feel that In Flames is back with all its strength and will. Their name is screamed again and again and the younger band members take pictures of the audience while the others seem really moved by all this love. It offers an occasion for the singer to say: “Make some noise for our new best friends of Of Mice & Men who deserve to play much longer!”. On the song “Alias”, a huge puppet of Owlboy, the mascot of the band, is set in place behind the drums and its red eyes will stay upon us for the rest of the concert. The energy of the public is so catching that after the wonderful “The Mirror’s Truth”, Anders explains us: “Usually, I don’t sing the last part, except when I feel really good, as tonight, thank you Paris!”. “The End” is aptly named since it is the last song for an amazing concert. The Swedish band succeeded in reviving it is link with its fans.

After an hour of great music and good energy, the band leaves its place on stage to Five Finger Death Punch and I hope that they are ready because In Flames blew it up! One more time, a large black sheet is hiding the stage from us but the pit gets crazy when we can see the musicians behind it. And “Lift Me Up” is the best song to open that show because the public sings the chorus all together! I didn’t had the chance to hear Ivan Moody’s voice at the Hellfest and I am totally addicted to the energy he puts in his performance and the control he has on his voice. “Never Enough” is the next song and it creates the same sort of support from the audience. The band’s last album is put forward with “Wash It All Away”, “Got Your Six” and “Ain’t My Last Dance”. Chris Kael, the bass player also known as Mr. Octopus, is having fun on stage, playing with the photographs and the his fans by sticking his tongue out and giving the finger to all of us, which is almost his signature move. Then he throws all of his bass picks in the pit. Ivan knows that we are all a “Bad Company” here in the venue so he starts to sing this famous song, perfectly known by the audience. The stage seems too big for the band which has less accessories on stage than In Flames and its drummer and keyboardist put on two pedestals on each side.“”Jekyll & Hyde” offers an occasion for Ivan to cross the stage wearing a broad and mischievous smile, imitating the multiple personalities of the famous character from the book. He always takes the time to smile to his fans and to address them a sign, sometimes to make a heart with his hands. After a short break thanks to “The Agony Of Regret”, Jason Hook comes closer to the audience with his acoustic guitar for the songs “Wrong Side Of Heaven” and “Remember Everything”. As usually, the singer invited three kids on stage with him. The public supports them as much as possible, especially since the youngest boy and the little girl start to cry. Ivan stays close to them and tries to comfort them by introducing to us “the new Metalheads generation”! Then he makes the audience having fun by opening the energy drink he gave to the youngest boy before helping them getting down from stage; and the show goes on with “Coming Down” and “Under And Over It”. The band keeps going with a crazy pace and nothing can stop it once it has started! Jeremy Sencer, the drummer, seems a bit lonely at the back of the stage and Zoltan Bathory, the second guitar player, stays on the right side of the stage. The magnificent “The Bleeding” is the last song for tonight and the band disappears in the backstage after giving some picks and drum sticks. Ivan however takes the time to stay a bit more and sign everything he receives from the audience. Then he thanks everyone, and especially the security members who did a great job tonight.

The evening was even better than what I was expecting! We were a bit scared not to be able to show you some pictures with this report because the security instructions were very strict because of the threats received by the band in 2015 and the photographs just got to know at the very last moment that they would have the right to take pictures. This concert was a really time of pleasure! Of Mice & Men didn’t had enough time so I hope that you’ll go and see them next time they come to France. In Flames proved that they’re still in the game and destroyed all the bad memories I had from their previous shows! And finally, Five Finger Death Punch: talent, energy, good state of mind, will to share and incredible songs, it could only be great! The audience can go home with a huge smile on their face and this concert will be remembered!
To conclude, I just want to come back on something I’ve heard while leaving the venue. Someone said that the public had paid for nothing (to stay polite) because Five Finger Death Punch played just one hour. But the answer to this chocked me even more: “You know, it’s normal. Ivan is unstable so they can’t play longer.” At first, it seems that Ivan is seen as a sort of uncontrollable creature who would slice everyone’s throat if the band had to play for more than an hour, which is not fair regarding any person suffering from any sort of personal issue, addiction or problems of any kind. And then, I think it’s important to remind that it’s a co-headline tour, which means that In Flames and Five Finger Death Punch have the same time on stage, which means an hour in Paris where the schedule is precise because of a law about the noise pollution for the concert rooms in town. So yes, indeed it has the disadvantage to give “too short” sets to the bands, and I admit that Five Finger Death Punch didn’t had the time to play some songs such as “Burn MF” that was supposed to be on the setlist, but In Flames has to remove some songs of its setlist too; and Of Mice & Men was probably the band suffering the most of this tight schedule. Nonetheless, it is a way to see two incredible bands in one night, and I think it was a success tonight!
