Hellixxir, groupe grenoblois, formé en 2001, propose un metal alliant dark, thrash et black. Leur 4ème album : The Black Fortress est sorti en octobre 2019. Le band est le dernier à se présenter sur la scène du Festival Nice Is Burning.
Avec Alexandre Manin, au chant, Laurent Couarraze et Matthieu Laforêt à la guitare, Baptiste Gastaldin à la basse et Romain Charbonnier à la batterie, le groupe a 4 albums à son actif (dont une compilation présentant des inédits). Sur les 12 titres joués durant ce live, 10 font partie de leur dernier opus : The Black Fortress qui en compte 11. Les 2 autres chansons sont plus anciennes dont Childhood's Trouble qui apparaît sur leur 1er album : War Within et qu'ils ont choisi en ouverture.
L'intro instrumentale des 2 guitaristes, veloutée, murmure à nos oreilles telle une douce balade avant qu'un son plus heavy ne vienne perturber la délicatesse du moment. Le rythme plus ardent, complété par une rythmique plus sombre, les riffs saturés convergent pour produire une mélodie atmosphérique envoûtante, avant de retomber dans le calme initial. Une jolie entrée en matière. Le chanteur rejoint la scène pour le second morceau et le ton monte ou plutôt un growl lugubre. La rythmique trépigne, évacuant les affres de la colère. Les guitares, tour à tour, mordantes ou mélodiques égrènent leurs distorsions ou leurs harmoniques. 'The Black Fortress' nous entraîne dans un tourbillon pour mieux nous aspirer dans ses effrayants méandres. Mais le voyage est loin d'être achevé et 'Oxymoronic Way Of Life' ne nous laisse aucun répit. Le tempo varie pour se faire écrasant ou plus alerte, telle une course poursuite, où caché, on attend dans l'obscurité d'un abri que le danger soit passé. Mais le péril est proche. Alors, on sort de son refuge pour à nouveau fuir. La voix vocifère des rugissements démoniaques et le périple se prolonge vers l'inéluctable. 'A Journey To The Ineffable' enchaîne les riffs speed et la ligne de basse y est incisive. 'Tat Tvam Asi - The Cosmic Veil Of Illusion' est un titre tiré d'un mantra sanskrit : Tat Tvam Asi, utilisé pour amener à la prise de conscience. Ce n'est absolument pas le cas ici. Il n'invite pas à la méditation. C'est au contraire un puissant désespoir qui l'habite, tant il est traversé par une instrumentation thrash et des soli acérés. La noirceur est à son comble avec 'Blood Writings'. 'Wolf Behind Bars' est une chanson qui condense toutes les qualités techniques du band.
Hellixxir est un groupe dont la maîtrise instrumentale est incontestable, que ce soit les guitaristes dont les soli et les riffs surfent sur plusieurs registres avec une évidente habilité, le batteur alternant entre tempo musclé, blast beats et ambiance plus lourde, appuyé par les fameuses sections rythmiques du bassiste. Le chanteur apporte sa touche de terreur et de sinistrose par ses screams rugueux. Dark, Thrash et Black à souhait, on reprendrait bien une dose de cet Hellixxir.

The instrumental intro of the 2 guitarists, velvety, whispers to our ears like a soft ballad before a heavier sound comes to disturb the delicacy of the moment. The more ardent rhythm, completed by a darker rhythmic, the saturated riffs converge to produce a bewitching atmospheric melody, before falling back into the initial calm. A nice start. The singer joins the stage for the second track and the tone rises or rather a gloomy growl. The rhythmic stamps, evacuating the throes of anger. The guitars, in turn, biting or melodic, play their distortions or their harmonics. The Black Fortress' drags us in a whirlwind to better suck us in its frightening meanders. But the journey is far from being finished and 'Oxymoronic Way Of Life' doesn't let us rest. The tempo varies to become crushing or more alert, like a chase, where hidden, we wait in the darkness of a shelter that the danger is over. But the danger is close. Then, one leaves one's shelter to flee again. The voice utters demonic roars and the journey continues towards the inevitable. A Journey To The Ineffable' has speedy riffs and an incisive bass line. Tat Tvam Asi - The Cosmic Veil Of Illusion' is a title taken from a Sanskrit mantra: Tat Tvam Asi, used to bring awareness. This is absolutely not the case here. It does not invite to meditation. On the contrary, it is a powerful despair that inhabits it, so much it is crossed by a thrash instrumentation and sharp soli. The darkness is at its peak with 'Blood Writings'. Wolf Behind Bars' is a song that condenses all the technical qualities of the band.
Hellixxir is a band whose instrumental mastery is undeniable, whether it is the guitarists whose solos and riffs surf on several registers with an obvious skill, the drummer alternating between muscular tempo, blast beats and heavier atmosphere, supported by the famous rhythm sections of the bassist. The singer brings his touch of terror and sinister with his rough screams. Dark, Thrash and Black as you wish, we would like to take a dose of this Hellixxir.
